ACTION ALERT

TROPHY HUNTING OF MOUNTAIN LIONS PROPOSED FOR CALIFORNIA
California Assembly Member Bill Maze (R-Visalia) has amended his Mountain Lion Trophy Hunting Bill, AB 24. Typically, a legislator will claim the amended bill addresses the concerns raised by the public. Based on this logic all letters received up to the amendment date are dismissed as outdated. This amended bill does not address any of our concerns, and it is urgent that you let the committee know this with written letters. Please hurry!

The amended version of AB 24:
Provides for a statewide lottery of 116 sport hunting permits for mountain lions
Requires the California Department of Fish and Game to determine zones where the 116 mountain lions will be killed
Initiates a year round hunting season for mountain lions
Allows each hunter to use three dogs to hunt mountain lions
Prohibits the killing of kittens or female lions accompanied by kittens
According to the Legislative Counsel analysis: "The bill would permit the sale or possession of any mountain lion or any part or product thereof, if the mountain lion was taken in accordance with its provisions." Read the full text of the amended AB 24...

Mr. Maze has only addressed the concerns of sport hunting groups by increasing the total number of mountain lions to be hunted and killed for fun. Mr. Maze attempts to appeal to mountain lion friends and supporters by adding the false promise of protecting kittens and their mothers.

Don't be fooled. Female mountain lions spend more than half their adult lives caring for dependent kittens, but are not always accompanied by them. Kittens are often left alone as the mother hunts for food. When a mother is chased by a pack of dogs the kittens will surely be left behind. Once the dogs have treed the lion, and the hunter arrives on the scene for the kill, he will have a difficult time distinguishing a male from a female and it is virtually impossible to discern if this is a female caring for kittens.

Bottom line:
AB 24 will make year round trophy hunting of mountain lions legal again in the state of California. It promotes the random killing of 116 mountain lions per year, whether or not the lion has caused a problem, and it creates a legal market for heads, pelts and organs taken from mountain lions in California. California's current mountain lion management plan is intensive and targeted. Lions perceived to be a threat to public safety or livestock are already hunted and killed. When livestock or pets are killed by a mountain lion, that particular lion is hunted and killed. Current law specifically removes lions with a propensity for human conflict from the gene pool.

Take Action!
Write a personal letter to Chairperson Lois Wolk first. Your personal letter will have far more power than form letters the Mountain Lion Foundation could supply. State that you are opposed to the amended version of AB 24, the Mountain Lion Trophy Hunting Bill. Then write every member of the Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee to share your concerns and opposition to this bill. Ask them to let you know how they plan to vote on this bill and how they plan to protect California's mountain lions.

It is imperative that your letters arrive quickly. This Committee began hearing this bill on Tuesday, March 29th.

Your action is critical to stopping this bill and the trophy hunting it promotes.
